Orthodontic FAQs in Reston, VA
Whether you're considering orthodontic treatment for the first time or seeking a new provider, Reston Orthodontics is here to answer your questions and guide you through every step of your smile transformation journey.
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics (also referred to as dentofacial orthopedics) is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities.
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience after attending dental school.
Dr. Kim holds a Certificate in orthodontics, which she received after graduating from an accredited orthodontic residency. She also has a Master’s degree in the Science of Dentistry, which is an additional degree not all orthodontists receive.
What should I look for when choosing an orthodontist?
Look at different websites and reviews. Do you want to be at a large practice or smaller practice? Does the office have multiple doctors where you aren't seeing the same doctor every time for consistency?
Reston Orthodontics is a smaller practice and Dr. Kim is the only doctor. This means you will spend more time with Dr. Kim compared to larger practices. A lot of people who have had orthodontic treatment have said, “I never saw the doctor.” That is the opposite of what you’ll experience here.
Since Dr. Kim is the only doctor, your treatment will be consistent. Often larger practices have multiple doctors where the doctors do things a different way. If a patient keeps seeing a different doctor frequently, it can lead to inconsistent treatment, which will delay your treatment time.
Why is visiting the orthodontist so important?
Orthodontic treatment can be a crucial part of your oral health care. Teeth that properly work together make it possible to chew and bite properly. The beautiful smile that results from orthodontic treatment sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth. Not doing any orthodontic treatment can cause a lot of problems in the future.
What's involved in the first visit?
During your complimentary consultation at our Reston orthodontic office, we'll take photos, X-rays, and possibly a digital scan of your teeth to assess your orthodontic needs. Dr. Kim will review your records with you and discuss treatment options tailored to fit your lifestyle and preferences.
What kind of orthodontic issues do you treat?
We specialize in addressing a wide range of orthodontic concerns, including crowding, excessive spacing, crossbites, narrow or misaligned jaws, open bites, deep bites, overjet, and abnormal tooth eruption.
What treatments do you offer?
At Reston Orthodontics, we offer a variety of treatment options to suit your needs and preferences, including:
- Metal braces for effective and reliable tooth movement.
- Clear braces for a more discreet orthodontic solution.
