Emergency Orthodontic Care in Reston, VA

If there is an emergency, we want to provide prompt and effective care to relieve any discomfort or pain you may be experiencing. While true emergencies requiring immediate attention are rare, we understand the importance of addressing your concerns promptly and professionally.

If you encounter an orthodontic emergency, such as severe pain or discomfort, please contact our office right away. Our team will assess your situation and provide guidance on the next steps to alleviate your symptoms.

Here's how we handle common orthodontic emergencies:

  • Loose Appliance: If you have a loose appliance, avoid eating sticky or chewy foods until it can be recemented. Stick to soft foods to prevent further damage. When we place it back in, we will remove the loose appliance, clean off the old cement, and securely reattach it using new cement.?
  • Loose Bracket: If a bracket becomes loose, there's no immediate action required if it's not causing discomfort. However, if it bothers you, contact our office for an appointment. We'll carefully remove the loose bracket from the wire, clean off any remaining adhesive, and reattach it to ensure your treatment progresses smoothly.
  • Poking Wire: If a wire is poking or causing irritation, try placing a small amount of orthodontic wax around the protruding wire to provide temporary relief. If it continues to bother you, contact our office to schedule an appointment, and we'll adjust the wire accordingly. Depending on the situation, we may move the wire back into position or clip it to prevent further discomfort.
  • General Soreness: If you're experiencing general soreness from orthodontic treatment, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort. Stick to soft foods like pasta, rice, soup, or ice cream to minimize irritation while your mouth heals.
  • Facial Trauma: In the event of facial trauma resulting in chipped or fractured teeth or movement of teeth, notify Dr. Kim immediately. We'll assess the extent of the damage and provide appropriate treatment to restore your dental health and address any orthodontic concerns.
